One-on-One Coaching Details
Goals
The goals of integrating a coaching element into the Leadership Academy include the following:
Description
To provide a one-to-one coaching element to the Leadership Academy, each Academy participant from the local government agency will be matched with the Chief Executive, Assistant Manager, Department Head or Senior Manager from the agency. The organizing committee will approve the matches and provide the names and contact information of the coaches to the Co-Directors.
All the coaches will attend an orientation session. Attending the orientation session is a requirement for serving as a coach.
It is expected that coaches and Academy participants will meet informally once per month for an hour starting after the second session for a total of at least three sessions. These sessions will be informal and confidential exchanges.
At the discretion of the coach, the coach may invite the participant to an appropriate internal or outside professional meeting.
Responsibilities
Agency: The participating agency will identify the coaches from their organization prior to the orientation session. In addition, the agency is responsible for making the one-to-one matches and notifying Joelle Fockler at joelle.fockler@cityofconcord.org.
Coaches: The senior managers/coaches will attend a virtual orientation session on October 19, 2023 at 2:30 pm or October 23, 2023 at 10 am and meet with their designated Academy participants for at least four sessions. There is a mid-Academy virtual check-in on February 15, 2024 at 1 p.m. The coaches will be invited to the Graduation Ceremony on April 11, 2024 as well as a virtual debriefing session on April 25, 2024.
The Co-Directors of the Leadership Academy will:
Academy Participants: Participants will be responsible for scheduling each of their one-to-one coaching sessions. They are expected to come prepared to discuss their career development goals and needs or to get advice on work-related dilemmas.

1. Conversations between coaches and Academy participants are strictly confidential.
2. The senior manager serving as a coach will not be in the participant’s chain of command.

- Organize and conduct the orientation session for the coaches
- Orient the Academy participants
- Provide resource materials and guidance for both coaches and emerging leaders
- Communicate on a monthly basis with the coaches regarding topics being covered in the Academy
- Conduct a mid-Academy check-in with the coaches to debrief the ongoing coaching experience and provide further guidance and support as necessary
- Arrange for the coaches to be recognized at the Academy graduation session
Academy Participants: Participants will be responsible for scheduling each of their one-to-one coaching sessions. They are expected to come prepared to discuss their career development goals and needs or to get advice on work-related dilemmas.
- Informational interview by December 13, 2023
- Initial development conversation by February 7, 2024
- Follow-up development conversation by April 10, 2024
- Post-graduation conversation by April 25, 2024
